How to Prepare for Winter on the Water: SUP Edition
Stand-up paddleboarding doesn’t stop when the temperatures drops. Although, it does require a little more planning. Winter paddling can be an incredibly rewarding experience. From snow-capped shorelines to crisp, peaceful water, it offers serenity you can’t find in peak season. But staying safe, warm, and prepared is key.
Why Paddleboard in the Winter?
There are Less Crowds, you’ll often have the water to yourself. Scenic Views, to paddle past snow-dusted landscapes and icy reflections. It may be a Cold-Weather Challenge, but you can test your skills and stamina in a new environment.
What to Wear for Winter Paddleboarding
Dress for the water, not the air. Hypothermia is a real risk, even if it’s sunny out. Here’s what to wear:
Wetsuit or Drysuit: A 5mm wetsuit is suitable for most fall/winter paddling. If you're on colder waters or planning longer trips, upgrade to a drysuit.
Thermal Base Layers: Merino wool or moisture-wicking synthetics are your best bet.
Booties + Gloves: Neoprene keeps your hands and feet warm while maintaining grip.
Hat or Beanie: Prevent heat loss from your head.
Tip: Always check your local water temperature before heading out. Anything below 15°C (59°F) requires cold-water gear.
Check Before You Go
Wind Forecast: Gusts feel stronger in cold weather and can throw off your balance.
Weather Warnings: Avoid paddling if there’s snow squalls, freezing rain, or poor visibility.
Launch Locations: Choose familiar, accessible entry points with easy exit routes.
